neoRECORDER  Troubleshooting

          General Recording Issues

3-1

I cannot select the recording speed. The spec recording speed is not displayed for the DVD drive I have connected.

The drive is not retrieving the disc information properly.

When recording onto a DVD disc, the recording speed which the disc supports is retrieved by the drive before recording begins.

If the DVD disc and DVD drive are incompatible, the drive spec recording speed may not be displayed. That is, the drive cannot determine the optimal recording speed for the DVD disc, because it cannot retrieve the disc information. Try using a different brand of DVD disc. (It is always safe to use the brand of disc recommended by the drive maker.)

Also, the DVD drive itself may be unstable, so it cannot retrieve the disc information properly. Check your drive connections and settings. Also, click on your system below for more details on checking the ASPI Manager:
Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP.

A SCSI/ATAPI error occurs during recording. (All errors except transfer speed errors.)

If an error occurs for some reason while recording using neoRECORDER, an error code describing the state of the drive is displayed. This information is retrieved from the drive itself, not from neoRECORDER.

Check the error number against the ATAPI Error List for suggested action to take to rectify the problem.

Note: There are some cases where the problem cannot be rectified.

3-3

My recording is terminated or my PC hangs while recording.

When there is a data transmission problem during recording, an error message appears and recording is terminated. But if your PC freezes, the data transfer speed may be unstable and the data is not being transferred properly between neoRECORDER 7 and the drive. Check your drive connections and settings.

Back

3-4

neoRECORDER unexpectedly terminated and my hard disk has occupied space on it.

Temporary files normally exist on the hard drive you specified in [Work Folder] under the [Options] tab of the Options Properties window. Temporary files may be left after an unexpected failure during recording. In this case, simply delete the file [BS***.tmp] manually. (This problem does not occur when recording using On-the-Fly.)

Back

3-5

A message "Cannot control the CD-ROM drive" appears when recording.

This problem may be caused by the ASPI Manager. Reset the ASPI manager to the standard Windows ASPI Manager using the following procedures (click applicable system): Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP. If errors persist, your CD-ROM drive may not be compatible with neoRECORDER. Please contact the MedioStream Support with the model and serial number of your drive.

Do I have to enable the [Copy Permission] option under the [Track Information] tab of the [Track Properties] window to copy data from a CD I created?

No, you do not. The [Copy Permission]information does not have any effect on drives that are currently being sold, so you can copy data recorded onto the disc even though this option is disabled.

Back

3-7

Can I save the disc directory of the files I added to neoRECORDER 7?

Yes. The file/folder directory of the CD/DVD you are creating (or have created) in neoRECORDER 7 is called a project. By saving projects, you can always refer back to them at a later date and edit the layout or record another disc with the same contents. Select [Save Project] from the [File] menu to save the current project.

3-8

I cannot select [Simulate Only] or [Simulate then Record] on the Record Settings window.

The [Simulate Only] and [Simulate then Record] options are invalid when recording onto a
• DVD+R or DVD+RW disc.
• DVD-R or DVD-RW disc in Track-At-Once.
Also, when the buffer underrun prevention function is enabled on some drives, such as the YAMAHA CRW-F1 series or CRW3200 series, MITSUMI CD-4808TE or CD-48X9TE, and TOSHIBA SD-R5002 or SD-R6112, you cannot select the simulate options. Refer to the Drive Restrictions PDF file for more details.

3-9

I cannot record onto a disc that has data written on it using packet-writing software.

neoRECORDER 7 is premastering software, so you can record onto a blank disc as it is.

You cannot use discs that have been formatted using neoCLIP, or retail preformatted discs with neoRECORDER 7.

If the disc is a rewritable disc, such as CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW, you can use neoRECORDER 7 to erase the data recorded on it and revert it to a blank disc.

3-10

What is the difference between "Verification" and "Comparison"?

"Verification" checks whether the data recorded onto the CD-R/RW disc can be read properly after recording is complete. It does not check whether the contents have been recorded properly.

"Comparison" checks whether the data recorded onto the CD-R/RW disc is exactly the same as the original data. "Comparison" is rigorously executed by bit. Since each recorded bit is compared against the original, if, for example, a read error occurs in either the destination or source drive when copying a disc, a comparison error will occur.

Even if such a comparison error occurred, the recording drive or the read CD/DVD-ROM drive has a function that internally detects and corrects disc bit errors when the data is read. So there should be no problem with the disc if a comparison error occurred.

3-11

My computer freezes when I click the [Record] button.

There are cases where the computer will freeze when you click the [Record] button if you are using an ATAPI CD-RW drive with DMA mode enabled.

If you are using an old ATAPI CD-RW drive with a maximum recording speed of 4x, the drive itself does not support DMA transfer and the disc cannot be recorded properly. That is why the computer freezes.

Change the CD-RW drive transfer mode from DMA to PIO using the procedure explained under "3. Is the DMA setting enabled?" in ATAPI drives.

When recording additional data onto a disc, I set it so that files with the same file names will be overwritten, but the old file did not get overwritten with the new file.

Check the overwrite settings before recording the data.

neoRECORDER 7 will overwrite files with the same file name when recording additional data onto an already recorded disc in TAO. (The file is actually made invisible, it is not physically overwritten.)

The [File/Folder Overwrite] setting can be found under the [Track] tab in the Options window. You can choose between [Prioritize newer files] or [Confirm when overwriting]. By selecting the latter, every time a file with the same file name as an existing file is found, an overwrite confirmation appears when recording begins.

Note: If you click the [Overwrite All] button on the confirmation window, all files will be overwritten regardless. If you want to overwrite only the newer files, click the [All New Files] button.

3-13

I recorded additional data onto an already recorded disc in TAO, but I cannot view the old data.

Check that the [Autoload Before Recording] option is enabled in the [Edit] menu on the menu bar. By enabling this option, the data recorded in the previous session information will be loaded into the current session before recording. If this option is not enabled, the previous session information will be ignored and you will not be able to access the information after the current session is recorded. Refer to the User's Manual for more details.

Can I open, change and save files that were recorded on a disc?

No, you cannot.
neoRECORDER 7 is premastering software, so it does not allow you to edit or save files that are recorded onto discs using it, even if you used CD-RW or DVD-RW discs. To open, change and save files that are recorded onto a disc, you require packet writing software, such as neoCLIP. Packet writing software allows you to write files onto a CD/DVD as you would onto a floppy disk or your hard disk, so if you want to edit and save files written onto a CD/DVD, use packet writing software. (Note: The drives supported by neoCLIP and neoRECORDER 7 vary.)

If you want to open, change and save files using neoRECORDER 7, use the following procedure.
1. Copy the file from the disc onto the desktop.
2. Disable the "Read only" attribute for the file in the file's Properties window.
3. Open and edit the file.
4. Save the file and use neoRECORDER 7 to record it onto a disc.

If the disc file was originally copied from was recorded in TAO you can overwrite the file on the disc.

3-15

Can I create a bootable disc using a set of bootable Windows XP boot floppy disks?

You can only create a bootable disc using one (1) boot floppy disk with neoRECORDER 7.

neoRECORDER 7 uses the El Torito floppy emulation mode when creating bootable discs. When the CD/DVD is being created, a virtual floppy disk is created on the disc, but due to format specifications, the boot information is to be a maximum of 1.44 MB.

The Windows XP installation CD uses El Torito non-emulation mode, which supports boot information with a capacity over 1.44 MB. However, neoRECORDER does not support this format.
